Fungal Diseases Flashcards
Do all fungi cause disease in humans?
No. There are millions of different fungi but only a couple hundred can cause diseases in humans.
Are fungi prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms? Why?
Fungi are eukaryotic organisms because they contain a nucleus.
Name three example of fungi.
Mushrooms, yeast and mould.
Where do fungi get their nutrients from?
Fungi get their nutrients from dead or dying matter such as fallen trees and dead leaves. They break this material down so it doesn’t pile up.
What is decomposition?
Decomposition is the breaking down of dead or dying matter to stop it from piling up.
Where can fungi grow?
Fungi can grow in dense forests, cold refrigerators and between people’s toes but they prefer warm, moist conditions like forests.
How do fungi reproduce?
Fungi reproduce by producing spores which are carried through the air by wind or other organisms. More spores = more of a chance that the spores will land in an environment that will support growth. If the environment supports growth, the spore can germinate (grow) to produce a new fungus.
What can cause fungal infections in humans?
Spores which land on your body can cause fungal infections in humans.
What increases your chances of getting a fungal infection?
People who have weak immune systems and those who are taking certain medications (like antibiotics) have a higher risk of getting fungal infections.
What is athlete’s foot?
Athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis) is a fungal infection that infects the feet which is caused by the fungus Trichophyton.
What are the symptoms of athlete’s foot?
The symptoms of athlete's foot are: - itching - blistering - redness in the skin between the toes.
Is athlete’s foot contagious and if so, how can it be spread?
Athlete’s foot is common and contagious and it can be spread from person to person through contaminated floors and shoes.
How can athlete’s foot be treated?
Athlete’s foot can be treated with topical anti-fungal ointments and the feet will need to be kept dry in order to kill the fungus.
