Product Knowledge
What is the difference between a casket and a coffin?
A casket is a rectangular shape but a coffin is anthropoidal (human-shaped)
What are hardwood caskets?
- Caskets made from broad-leaved deciduous trees (annually shed their leaves)
- higher end casket
- wood can come from Birch, Cherry, Mahogany, Maple, Oak, Pecan, Poplar, and Walnut trees
What are softwood caskets?
- Caskets made from coniferous trees (evergreens and shrubs; trees that have cones)
- Wood can come from pine, cedar, and spruce trees
What are the categories of wood by-product caskets?
- Corrugated fiberboard
- particle Board
- Plywood
- composition board
Select Hardwood/Salix
- Selection of several select hardwoods
- The component parts of the casket are constructed with different species of hardwoods
Gloss/Polished Finish
- A surface made smooth and glossy, usually by friction; brought to a highly developed, finished, or refined state; burnished
Semi-gloss Finish
- A low-luster finish
Satin Finish
- A type of semi-lister or semi-gloss casket finish that is smooth with well-defined fine lines or striations
- Similar in appearance to the semi-gloss finish
Matte/Flat Finish
- A finish without gloss and has a dull, lusterless surface
Heartwood
- The wood that is in the center of the tree
- The tree’s best-quality wood
- Darker color; more decay-resistant
- Preferred material for casket production
Sapwood
- The layers of wood found between the heartwood and the bark of the tree
- Lighter color
What are ferrous metal caskets?
- Metal formed from iron; has carbon
- Steel and stainless steel
- most common metal casket
- measured by gauge
How to measure gauge
The lower the gauge(number), the thicker the material.
(example: 16 gauge is thicker than 20 gauge)
What are nonferrous metal caskets?
- caskets made from any metal not formed from iron
- Can be made of either copper or bronze
- measured by oz per square foot
Ferritic Stainless Steel
- Basic grade of stainless steel with good corrosion resistance properties
- Also known as: 400 Series or 409 stainless; 11-0 or 12-0 stainless
Austenitic Stainless Steel
- Steel that has a higher chromium content (18%) and added nickel (8)
- Also known as: 300 series or 304 stainless; 18-8 stainless
- Better quality than ferritic; more corrosion resistance
Wrought Copper
Copper metal rolled into sheets
Copper Deposit
A casket made from a solid core of copper metal to which copper ions are combined by an electrolytic process
Brushed Finish
- Bare metal is scratched with an abrasive material and then finished until a smooth high gloss is obtained
Plated Finish
- A base metal is coated by another metal via an electrolytic process
Crinkled Finish
An exterior casket finish in which the metal is coated with a substance that wrinkles as it dries
Hammertone Finish
- A sprayed finish that has the appearance of small indentations in the metal (as if struck by a ball-peen hammer);
- the indentations are in the paint and appear as the paint dries
Ziegler Case
- A gasketed container that can be used as an insert into a casket or as a separate shipping container (Can be placed inside a casket and/or air tray)
- used because of contagion, advanced decomposition, or international shipment of unembalmed remains
- hermetically sealed using fusion; zinc-lined.
Broadcloth
A twilled, napped woolen or worsted fabric with a smooth, lustrous face and dense texture; usually made of cotton, silk, rayon woven in a plain or rib weave with a soft-semi-gloss finish
Canvas
A firm, closely woven cotton fabric
Doeskin/Moleskin
A heavy, durable cotton fabric with a short (1/8 inch or less) velvety map on one side
- woven cloth with a suede-like appearance with a nap of less than 1/8 inch
Plush
A woven cloth with a nap exceeding 1/8 inch
What are green/biodegradable caskets made from?
- Example of alternative casket
- Willow
- Bamboo
- Sea Grass
- Wicker
- Unfinished Pine
- Burial Shrouds
What is a fiberglass casket?
- Example of alternative casket
- a casket made from a material consisting of extremely fine glass embedded in various resins
- can come in various colors or mimic wood and metal caskets
What is a plastic casket?
- Example of alternative casket
- synthetic or natural material shaped when soft and then hardened
What is a polymer casket?
- casket made of a substance similar to plastic and very durable
Ogee/Rim
An “S” shaped molding that is a component of the casket top
Crown/Shell
The uppermost part of the cap, extending from rim to rim (everything above the rim of the cap)
Pie/Fishtail
The wedge-shaped portion of the cap at each end of the crown
Header/Bridge/Cap Filler
That portion of the cap/lid that is constructed into caskets that display a cut top
- Provides strength/rigidity at the point of the transverse cut
Rim Flange/Ogee Flange
The turned-under edge or horizontal portion of the rim which comes into contact with the gasket
What is a flange?
A ridge that increases strength
Gasket Channel/Transverse Gasket Channel
- Found on cut-top gasketed caskets
- Its function is to hold the transverse gasket to seal the space between the head and foot caps of the casket
- An integral part of the foot panel header on gasketed caskets
Header Flange/Bridge Flange/Cap Filler Flange
The turned-under edge or horizontal portion of the header
