Funeral Blues Flashcards
Stop all, cut off, prevent
All imperatives - show how they want to disconnect from the world as they are silencing everything in a deliberate way as imperatives see forcefull
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Juxtaposition - between the piano which is elegant and the d du m which seems harsher could be symbolic of how they have changed from the grief to become less refined
Moaning overhead
Moaning - slow and desperate noise which is linked to suffering or sadness so shows how even the simple things in life now brings them misery
Scribbling on the sky the message he is dead
Verb scribbling - seems quite aggressive and unrefined which could show how the have become angry from the loss or that they can’t cope with it. Also seems like a hurried action so could show how they want to get their feelings of their chest
My North, my East, my South, my West
Listing - emphasises how much they meant to the writer and this list has a loving tone which is juxtaposed to the previously angry or sad tone further showing the importance as even their memory brings joy
I thought that love would last forever: i was wrong
Mostly monosyllabic- shows a lack of tone and therefore a lack of emotion which emphasises the grief they feel as it causes them to shutdown
Caesura - symbolic of how abruptly their love ended
The stars are not wanted now […] pack up the moon
Both the stars and the moon light up the sky in the night, this could be symbolic of how in this dark time of their life they don’t want help which implies they have almost given up on life if they can’t have their love back
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood
Both verb imply a very dismissive and careless action which shows how they have given up on life due to the grief as they no longer seem to care also shows how wavering their life is as both the oceans and the wood seem constant and also bring peace and relaxation which shows how they want to get rid of these
Nothing now can ever come to any good
Declarative statement - this hyperbole shows the extent of the grief because they believe now their love is gone things cannot return to normal and the use of the word ever suggests they will always think this no matter what happens
Fronted word - nothing shows their unwillingness to continue life normally
Dismantle the sun
Metaphor - emphasises the grief because in comparison to it things which are impossible seem insignificant and also because the sun seems like such a constant but now they have lost who they thought they would always have even these actions seem possible
Put out everyone
Symbolic- shows how they want to be alone and don’t want to see another path in life and instead due to the grief want to sit in an abyss of self pity and pain
Rhyming couplets
Seem like a heart beat - could show how they feel almost dead inside but they are just carrying on existing as an empty husk of their former self
- shows the importance of their love as it powers them on when thinking about it
Quatrains
Mainly partially regular and only regular in third stanza which is about the lover
- can only focus and connect with life when thinking about the one they lost
- trying to keep control of them selves but the grief is to great to control
Put crepe bows around the necks of the public doves
Public doves - show how they want everyone to know what they are going through and want others to pity them
Crepe bows - the material seems really delicate which is juxtaposed to their other seemingly unrefined actions which shows how they only care about their actions if it is about their love which emphasises how much they care for them because even after death they want to preserve their image
