What is a network?
A group of devices that are connected together to communicate and share network resources
Network components - hardware
Wireless Access Point: enables computers on a network to connect wirelessly
Network components - software
Network Operation System: controls network traffic
Benefits of setting up a network
- Reduce duplication of resources
- Easy access to resources
- Assist collaboration
Drawbacks of setting up a network
- High cost of hardware decives and bandwidth
- Need expertise in setup and maintenance
- Network failure or service slowdown
- Security breaches
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A network that spans a large area, often across multiple geological locations (city, country world etc.)
Local Area Network (LAN)
A self-contained network that spans a small area (home, school etc.)
What is an internet?
- Largest global WAN that links every country in the world
- Public owned and operated
- Contains many intranets
What is an intranet?
- Private networks that uses internet protocols and services to share a company’s information with employees
- Can be accessed from internet but with restrictions
Why do organisations use intranet?
- Keep sensitive information private and secure
- Convenient storing, organising, sharing and collaboration of information
