Fundamentals of EKG Flashcards

1
Q

Location of the heart

A

Lies in space between the lungs (mediastinum) in the middle of the chest. Behind sternum, above diaphragm. 2/3 of the heart lies to left of midline of sternum.

Q

Endocardium

A
  • Innermost layer of the heart.
  • Lines hearts inner chambers
  • Contains terminal components of hearts specialized conduction system
  • Continuous with the innermost layer of arteries, veins, and capillaries of the body-> creates a closed continuous circulatory system.

Q

Myocardium

A
  • Middle and thickest layer of heart.
  • Muscular component
  • Responsible for hearts pumping action.

Q

Blood flow through the heart: Cardiac Cycle

A

The interval from the beginning of one heart beat to the beginning of the next one. It represents a sequence of atrial contraction and relaxation followed by ventricular contraction and relaxation.

Q

Excitability

A

The ability of the cell to respond to an electrical impulse

17
Q

Conductivity

A

The ability of the cell to transmit an electrical impulse from one cell to another.

18
Q

Contractility

A

Contract when they are depolarized by an electrical impulse.
