Fundamentals of EKG Flashcards
Location of the heart
Lies in space between the lungs (mediastinum) in the middle of the chest. Behind sternum, above diaphragm. 2/3 of the heart lies to left of midline of sternum.
Walls of the heart
- Endocardium
- Myocardium
- Epicardium
- Pericardium
Endocardium
- Innermost layer of the heart.
- Lines hearts inner chambers
- Contains terminal components of hearts specialized conduction system
- Continuous with the innermost layer of arteries, veins, and capillaries of the body-> creates a closed continuous circulatory system.
Myocardium
- Middle and thickest layer of heart.
- Muscular component
- Responsible for hearts pumping action.
Epicardium
External layer of the heart.
Contains: arteries, blood capillaries, lymph cap, nerve fibers, and fat.
Pericardium
Double walled sac that encloses/protects the heart.
Purpose: Atria
Receive blood.
Purpose: Ventricles
Pump blood.
Heart chambers
(4): RA, RV, LA, LV
Left cicumflex artery
Block here means the whole posterior heart wont get blood flow.
Blood flow through the heart: Cardiac Cycle
The interval from the beginning of one heart beat to the beginning of the next one. It represents a sequence of atrial contraction and relaxation followed by ventricular contraction and relaxation.
Diastole
The period of atrial or ventricular relaxation
Systole
The period of atrial or ventricular contraction
Four intrinsic properties of cardiac muscle
- Automaticity
- Excitability
- Conductivity
- Contractility
Automaticity
The ability of the cell to spontaneously generate and discharge an electrical impulse
