Fundamentals CH 11 Key Terms Flashcards
The first stage of hair growth during which new hair is produced.
Anagen
The correct professional and anatomical term for the underarm; the region between the arm and the thoracic wall.
Axilla
A modality of electrolysis combining alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC).
Blend (electrolysis)
Type of hard wax used to modify the melting point and provide increased strength to hard depilatory wax
Candelilla
Type of hard wax used to modify the melting point and provide increased strength to hard depilatory wax
Carnauba
Second transition stage of hair growth, in this phase, the hair shaft grows upward and detaches itself from the bulb.
Catagen
Process of removing hair at the skin level
Depilation
Substance, usually a caustic alkali preparation, used for temporarily removing superfluous hair by dissolving it at the skin level.
Depilatory
Removal of hair by means of an electric current that destroys the hair root.
Electrolysis
Removes hairs from the follicles; waxing or tweezing.
Epilation
Direct current (DC) utilized in electrolysis
Galvanic electrolysis
The area between the eyebrows at the top of the nose
Glabella
An additive in soft wax
Gum rosin
Swelling at the base of the follicle that provides the hair with nourishment; it is a thick club-shaped structure that forms the lower part of the hair root
Hair bulb
Mass of epidermal cells forming a small tube, or canal; the tube-like depression or pocket in the skin or scalp that contains the hair root.
Hair follicle
Cone-shaped elevations at the base of the follicle that fit into the hair bulb; the papillae are filled with tissue that contains the blood vessels and cells necessary for hair growth and follicle nourishment
Hair papilla (plural: papillae)
Anchors hair to the skin cells and is part of the hair located at the bottom of the follicle below the surface of the skin; part of the hair that lies within the follicle at its base, where the hair grows
Hair root
Potion of the hair that extends or projects beyond the skin, consisting of the outer layer (cuticle), inner layer (medulla), and middle layer (cortex); color changes happen in the cortex
Hair shaft
The hair on a fetus; soft and downy hair
Lanugo
Photoepilation hair reduction treatment where laser beam is pulsed on skin using one wavelength at a time, impairing hair growth; intense pulse of electromagnetic radiation
Laser hair removal
A resin used in the manufacture of soft wax
Rosin
Ancient method of hair removal; original recipe is sugar, lemon juice and water heated to form syrup, molded into ball, and pressed onto skin, then quickly stripped away
Sugaring
A group of symptoms, when combined, characterize a disease or disorder
Syndrome
Resting phase; final phase in hair cycle lasting until fully grown hair is shed
Telogen
Longer coarse hair found on the head, face & body
Terminal hair
Banding; hair removal; cotton thread is twisted and rolled along skin surface, entwining hair in the thread and lifting it out of the follicle.
Threading
Scientific study of the hair and its diseases and care
Trichology
Also lanugo hair; short, fine, unpigmented downy hair that appears on the body, except for the palms of hands and soles of feet.
Vellus hair
The border of the lip line
Vermillion border
