Fundamentals Flashcards
What is a fluid?
A liquid or gas with the inability to resist tangential forces due to deformations
What is Viscosity?
A measure of the magnitude of resistance to an applied shear stress due to cohesion and interaction between molecules
What is the Ideal Gas Equation?
Pressure / Density = Gas Constant * Temperature
The gas constant is determined by the gas being studied
What is the main factor of viscosity in a gas?
The interaction between molecules
What is the main factor of viscosity in liquids?
The cohesive forces between molecules
What is a streamline?
The line taken up by successive particles of fluid passing through a given point
What is a pathline?
The path travelled by a given fluid particle (Only concerns one particle)
What is a streakline?
The line taken up by successive particles of fluid passing through a given point
What is inviscid flow?
Flow with negligible viscosity
What is incompressible flow?
The density is independent of pressure, usually treated as a constant density flow (can also be a constant mass flow rate)
