Fundamentals Flashcards
What is the anatomical position?
Body is erect and faces forward with arms to the side and palms facing forward, thumbs to the side. Feet are slightly apart with toes pointing forward.
Anterior
Front surface of body or structure
Posterior
Back surface of body or structure
Deep
Further from the surface
Superficial
Close to the surface
Internal
Near the inside
External
Nearer the outside
Lateral
Away from midline
Median
Mid-line of body
Medial
In direction of the mid-line
Superior
Located above or towards the upper part of
Inferior
Located below or towards the lower part
Proximal
Nearest to the point of reference
Distal
Furthest away from the point of reference
Prone
Laying face down in a horizontal position
Supine
Lying face up in a horizontal position
What are the three planes in anatomy?
Sagittal, frontal and transverse
Sagittal plane
Vertical plane that divides the body or organ vertically into left and right
Midsagittal plane
“Median” that runs directly down the middle of the body
Parasagittal plane
Vertical plane that divides the body into unequal left and right sides
Frontal plane
Dives body or organ into an anterior portion and posterior portion. Also known as coronal plane
Transverse plane
Transverse plane
What are the anatomical regions?
Head and neck, Trunk, Upper limbs and Lower limbs

Space that contains the internal organs. Can also be filled with air

Two main body cavities?
Dorsal cavity and ventral cavity
Where is the dorsal cavity located?
The posterior region of body
Where is the ventral cavity located?
The anterior region of the trunk
Sub-cavities of dorsal cavity
Cranial cavity and vertebral/spinal cavity
What is the cranial cavity?
Encloses the brain and is protected by the cranium (skull)
What is the vertebral cavity?
Contains the spinal cord and is protected by the vertebrae
Sub-cavities of ventral cavity
The thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
What does the thoracic cavity contain?
Lungs, heart, trachea, oesophagus, and thymus
What surrounds the thoracic cavity?
Ribs, muscles and intercostal muscles
What separates the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity?
The diaphragm
What does the abdominal cavity contain?
Stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine and most of large intestine
What protects the abdominal cavity?
The muscles of the abdominal wall, the diaphragm and ribcage
What does the abdominopelvic cavity contain?
Urinary bladder, reproductive organs and rectum
What protects the pelvic cavity?
Bones of the pelvis
