Fundamentals Flashcards
1
Q
What is an extensive property?
A
A property that depends on the size of the system
2
Q
What is an intensive property?
A
A property that’s independent of the size of the system
3
Q
What are the Laws of Thermodynamics?
A
- 0th Law: If two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third one, then they are in equilibrium with each other
- 1st Law: The energy gained by a system is equal to the energy lost by the surroundings
- 2nd Law: A reaction will cause energy to move from a more efficient form to a less efficient form, meaning the entropy will increase
4
Q
What is the relationship between density and specific volume?
A
Specific Volume = 1/Density
5
Q
How can we measure pressure?
A
- Barometer
- Manometer
- Bourdon Tube (Tube that coils or straightens out as pressure changes. Different types e.g. C-Type, Spiral, Helical, Twisted Tube)
- Strain-gage pressure transducer
- Piezoelectric transducers
6
Q
What is a system?
A
A quantity of matter, or a region of space chosen for analysis
7
Q
What types of systems are there?
A
- Open System: There is mass transfer through the system boundaries
- Closed System: There is a constant mass
