Fundamental Particles Flashcards
What is the relative charge and mass of protons, neutrons & electrons?
Charge:
Proton +1
Neutron 0
Electron -1
Mass:
Proton 1
Neutron 1
Electron 1/1840
What is an ion
A charged atom
What is an isotope
Atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons but same number of protons
Will isotopes have the same chemical and physical properties?
They will have the same chemical properties because of the same electron configuration but different physical properties (e.g density, radioactivity, melting point) because of the different mass number
What is the plum pudding model?
The atom is a ball of positive charge with negative electrons embedded in it
What is the electron shell model?
The atom consists of a small, dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons with electrons orbiting around it in electron shells.
