Vitals Signs
Also called cardinal signs, are body temperature, respiratory rate, blood pressure and pulse rate. (T,P, R, BP)
PYREXIA
Elevated body temperature, fever, hyperthermia
HYPERPYREXIA
Very high fever, temperature is 42 degree C (105.8 F) and above
HYPOTHERMIA
Subnormal or low body temperature
TACHYCARDIA
Rapid pulse rate (above 100 beats per minute for adult)
BRADYCARDIA
Slow pulse rate (below 60 beat per minute for adult)
EUPNEA
Normal breathing. It is quite or noiseless, effortless or rhythmic breathing
TACHYPNEA
Rapid breathing, above 20 breaths per minute in adult
BRADYPNEA
Slow breathing, less than 12 breaths per minute in adult
HYPERVENTILATION
Deep, rapid respiration, Also called Kussmaul’s breathing
HYPOVENTILATION
Slow, shallow respiration
ORTHOPNEA
Difficulty of respiration in supine or lying position relieved by upright or sitting position
APNEA
Absence or cessation of breathing
SYSTOLIC PRESSURE
Pressure of blood during ventricular contraction
DIASTOLIC PRESSURE
Pressure of blood during ventricular relaxation
PULSE PRESSURE
Is the difference between the systolic and diastolic pressure (systolic pressure minus diastolic pressure equals pulse pressure
Coughing up with blood
SEPSIS
Presence of infection
HEMATEMESIS
Vomiting of blood
INSPECTION
Assessing by using sense of sight
PALPATION
Examining the body by using sense of touch
PERCUSSION
Tapping body parts of produce sounds
AUSCULTATION
Listening to body sounds with the use of stethoscope
DYSPNEA
Difficult and labored respiration
