What do functionalist believe that about every social institution?
That they perform functions (jobs) which help society as a whole and it’s individual members
Why is there a need for sexual and reproductive functions?
If there wasn’t these functions, there would be no members within society
Why is here a need for the economic function?
Life would cease - it would come to an end
Why is there a need for the socialisation function?
There would be no culture (norms and values) which make social life possible
What is the reproductive function?
Children are produced which benefits society as it produces new meme eras which in turn, ensures the survival of that society
They will be born into a family which will look after the, and provide their needs
What is the socialisation function?
Family pass on the culture of that society to the child - shows them how to behave acceptably
What does the Talcott Parsons think the most important function is within Murdock claim?
Socialisation because it ensures that children understand how to behave
What is the economic function?
Family ensures that new members of the workforce are introduced - this means that they can earn money and provide for their family, shelter, food etc
What is the sexual function?
Families provide stable environments in which a husband and a wife can have a socially acceptable relationship - this strengthens the relationship between husband and wife and stabilises adult personalities
What does the sexual function act as a counterweight towards?
Stresses and strains of everyday life
