Functions of the Cell Membrane Flashcards
What are the functions of the cell membrane?
To retain cell contents and act as a selective barrier - regulating the movement of material in and out of the cell.
What is critical to a cell’s ability to maintain a constant internal environment?
Take in of food and elimination of wastes - cell membrane helps with these.
What is movement across cell membrane called? Why is it called this?
Selective transport because only certain substances are allowed to cross the membrane.
How are membranes classified?
Based on how selective they are.
What does an impermeable membrane do?
It does not let anything pass through the cell membrane. (like a jail)
Which time of membrane allows all materials to pass through?
Permeable (like a park)
What does a semipermeable membrane do?
Allows some particles to pass through the membrane while excluding other particles (like Old Scona :( )
