functions of respiratory organs Flashcards
Nose and Nasal Cavity
Air passes through the nose into the respiratory system. Tiny hairs and mucus trap dust
Throat (Pharynx) and epiglottis
Pharynx connects the oral and nasal cavities to the Trachea
Epiglottis prevents food from entering the trachea
Trachea with cartilage rings
Air flows down the trachea from the nose into the lungs
Trachea is reinforced with rings of cartilage
Lined with hairs to move dust and other particles out of the airways
Bronchi
Bronchi connect trachea to the lungs. Bronchi produce mucus also traps dust particles
Bronchioles
Air flows through bronchioles to each alveolus
Alveoli
Tiny air-filled sacs that are surrounded by small blood vessels called capillaries
Walls are very thin so gases can cross between capillaries and the sacs
Diaphragm
The diaphragm contracts to expand the space inside the thoracic cavity. Whilst this is happening, the muscles between the ribs also contract, which moves the rib cage up and out
