functions of cells Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus is a double membrane and communicates with the surrounding cytosol via numerous nuclear pores. which is in the Animal and plant cell.
What is the function of the nucleous?
The nucleous which is the prominent structure of the nucleus produces ribosomes that move out of the nucleus and take positions on the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Where it’s critical in protein synthesis. Which happens in the animal and plant cells.
What is the function of the cytosol?
The cytosol is the “soup” within which all the other cell organelles reside and where most of the cellular metabolism occurs. The cytosol is full of proteins that control cell metabolism including signal transduction pathways, glycolysis, intracellular receptors, and transcription factors. This occurs in the animal and plant cells.
What is the function of the centrosome?
The centrosome is an area un the cell where microtubules are produced. The animal cell centrosome is actually a pair of small organelles called centrioles. This occurs in both plant and animal cells.
What is the function of a centriole?
Each centriole is a ring of nine groups of fused microtubules. There are three microtubules in each group. Microtubules are part of the cytoskeleton. This function in animal and plant cells.
What is the function of the golgi?
Is a membrane-bound structure with a single membrane. It is actually a stack of membrane-bound vesicles that are important in packaging macromolecules for transport elsewhere in the cell. This occurs in the animal and plant cells.
What is the function of the lysosomes?
They contain hydrolytic enzymes necessary for intracellular digestion. In white blood cells they eat bacteria, lysosome contents are carefully released into the vacuole around the bacteria and serve to kill and digest those bacteria. This occurs in both cells.
What is the function of peroxisomes?
Responsible for protecting the cell from its own production of toxic hydrogen peroxide. This occurs in both cells.
What is the function of secretory vesicles?
They are transported to the cell surface for release. This occurs in both cells.
Cell membrane
The cell membrane acts as a protective barrier to the uncontrolled flow of water. This occurs in both cells.
Mitochondrion
Provide the energy a cell needs to move, divide, produce secretory product, contract - in short, they are the power centers of the cell. This occurs in both cells.
Vacuole
A membrane based sac that plays roles in intracellular digestion and release of cellular waste products. This occurs in Animal cells.
Cell wall
Protective cell wall made up of polysaccharides. This occurs in plant cells.
Chloroplasts
This is responsible for the plants green color and ability to absorb energy from sunlight. This occurs in the plant cells.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
The ER is a continuation of the outer nuclear membrane and it varied functions suggest the complexity of the eukaryotic cell. This occurs in both cells.
