Functions/Graphs Flashcards
What does “image” mean when we’re talking about a graph?
this is the y-coordinate
On the calculator, if you know the x-coordinate and want to find y, how do you you do it?
In the graph, go to “Graph Trace” and type in the x-coordinate. The cursor will jump to the correct place.
On the calculator, if you know the y-coordinate and want to find x, how do you do it?
Add a new function with just the y-value (this adds a flat line to the graph).
Find the intersection of the two lines (Menu > Analyze > Intersection)
Looking at a graph, how do you know if it is classified as a “function”?
If a vertical line can only touch once.
How do you find domain from a graph that is just dots?
You make a list of each x-coordinate (but you only list each number once).
How do you find range from a graph that is just dots?
You make a list of each y-coordinate once.
How do you find domain from a graph that is a whole line or curve?
You start with < x <.
Look the furthes left and put that number on the left of < x.
Look the furthest right and put that number on the right of x <.
What is an inverse function?
It’s the opposite/backwards of the original function. This means that swaps all the x and y coordinates of the original function.
How do you find the x-intercept if you only have the equation?
Plug in 0 instead of y and nSolve.
How do you find the y-intercept if you only have the equation?
Plug in 0 instead of x and nSolve.
How do you find the x-intercept on the graph on the calculator?
Menu > Analyze Graph > Zero
How do you find the y-intercept on the graph on the calculator?
Menu > Graph Trace
then type in 0
What should you never forget when making a graph.
Include the letter X
