Functions And Structures Flashcards
Hormones
Chemical messengers that are secreted by endocrine glands directly into the bloodstream
Endocrine galnds
Produce hormones
endocrine glands do not
Have ducts
13 glands
Pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, pancreas, adrenal, gonads
Pituitary gland other name
Hypophysis
Pituitary gland descrip
Pea-sized gland divided into two parts, the anterior and posterior
Hang from a stalk-like structure located below the hypothalamus in the brain
Function of pituitary gland
Secrete hormones that control the activity of other endocrine glands
Act in response to stimuli from neurohormones secreted by the hypothamulus
Creates a system of checks and balances to maintain an appropriate blood level of each hormone
Adrenocorticotropic hormone
Stimulates the growth and secretions of the adrenal cortex
Follicle-stimulating hormone
Stimulates the secretion of estrogen and growth of ova in the ovaries of female
Stimulates sperm production in the testicles
Growth hormone
Somatotropic hormone
Regulates the growth of bone, muscle, and other body tissues
Lactogenic hormone
Prolactin, stimulates and maintains the secretion of breast milk in the mother after childbirth
Luteinizing hormone
Stimulates ovulation in the female
Stimulates testosterone in male
Melanocyte-stimulating hormone
Increases the production of melanin in the melanocytes, causing darkening of skin pigmentation
Usually increases during pregnancy
Thyroid-secreting hormone
Stimulates the secretion of hormones by the thyroid gland
Antidiuretic hormone
Secreted by the hypothalamus and stored in the pituitary gland
Helps control blood pressure by reducing the amount of water that is excreted through the kidneys
Diuretic is administered to increase the amount of urine secretion
