Functions Flashcards
How can a function be represented?
- By an equation
- In a table
- By a graph
- In words
What is the range of a function?
The range of a function, f, is the set of all possible values of f(x) as x varies throughout the domain.
What is an independent variable?
A symbol that represents an arbitrary number in the domain of a function f.
What is a dependent variable?
A symbol that represents a number in the range of f.
What is the graph of the function f(x) = 2x - 1?
This is the equation of a line with slope 2 and y-intercept -1
What is the graph of the function f(x) = x^2?
This represents a parabola pointing upwards.
Explain the vertical line test.
The vertical line test states that a curve in the xy- plane is the graph of a function of x if and only if no vertical line intersects the curve more than once.
What is the absolute value of a number a and what is it denoted by?
Denoted by |a|
The absolute value of a number a is the distance from a to 0 on the real number line.
What is an even function?
If a function f satisfies f(-x) = f(x) for every number x in its domain, then f is called an even function?
What does the graph of an even function look like?
Its graph is symmertric with respect to the y-axis.
What is an odd function?
If a function f satisfies f(-x) = -f(x) for every number x in its domain, then f is called an odd function.
What does the graph of an odd function look like?
Its graph is symmetric about the origin.
