Bridge theory, education as a bridge gradually introducing children to wider society
What are the three parts of the bridge theory and what do they include?
Home- particularistic values and ascribed status
Education- gradually introduces people to new way of living
Wider society- universalistic values, meritocratic
Explain Davis and Moore’s theory of the purpose of education to role allocate and legitimisation of inequality?
David and moor- education acts as “sieve” sorting people into roles in society
Some make further than others- therefore inequality inevitable
Fair becasue society based on meritocratic ideals
How does this view blame the victim?
Doesn’t take in material deprivation and structural inequalities in society

Fails to take into account organisation of school and teacher expectations
