Functioning Systems Flashcards
Excretory System
Removes waste substances from the body
Immune System
Protects the body against infection
Respiratory System
Delivers oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide from the body
Blood circulatory system
Delivers oxygen and nutrients to body tissues
Endocrine System
Produces and secretes hormones around the body
Major systems of the human body
Integumentary system
Reproductive system
Nervous system
What is the Epithelial Tissue?
consists of tightly packed cells that line the internal and external surfaces of an organism.
What is the Nervous Tissue?
This is where neurons of the cells are found
What are the types of muscle tissues?
Skeletal
Cardiac
Smooth
What is the connective tissue?
This tissue connects the different tissue types and structures of the body.
Levels of organisation
- cell level
- tissue level
- organ level
- system level
What are the main organs in plants?
Leaves
Stems
Roots
What is transpiration?
When water ONLY move upwards the xylem
What is translocation?
When water and sugars move both up and down the phloem (plant)
Why is water moved through the plant?
Water provides support for the plant, allowing it to have an upright structure.
Plants leaves require water for the process of photosynthesis to make glucose and oxygen needed for growth and energy production.
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Light Dependent reaction
Steps of photosynthesis
- Light stimulates chlorophyll to release electrons, which results in the production of ATP. Light energy also splits water molecules, producing oxygen and hydrogen.
- The hydrogen takes up by hydrogen carrier (NADP+) to form NADPH. The splitting of water also releases electrons, which replace those by the chlorophyll
- The ATP and hydrogen (NADPH) are taken to the site of the light independent reactions.
Digestive system
The human digestive system (gut) is a tubular tract, which is regionally specialized into a complex series of organs and glands
Main function of the endocrine system
Release hormones that act on target with the correct receptor
Major structure of the endocrine system
Pancreas
Adrenal Gland
Thyroid Gland
Pineal Gland
The Gonads (ovaries and testes)
What is a hormone?
A hormone is a chemical messenger that is reported via the bloodstream to act on distant target cells.
