Bridge
A type of social tie that connects two different groups in a social network
Universalistic Standards
Everyone is judged by the same standards, regardless of family ties, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality etc.
Particularistic Standards
Children are not judged by standards that can be applied to everyone in society.
Norms
Unwritten rules within society
Values
Qualities or beliefs endorsed by a particular society
Ascribed status
The status in society that someone is born with (eg. royal family)
Achieved status
The status that someone puts work into to achieve
Socialisation function
The process of a person learning the norms and values of society, leading so social cohesion
Meritocracy
A persons advancement in society is based on said persons capabilities and talents rather than family wealth
Economic function
The social institution that organises the production, distribution, and consumption of society’s goods and services
Society in miniature
View of school as smaller society to prepare young people to enter wider society according to Emile Durkheim
Equality of opportunity
Everyone has the same chance and opportunity, no matter their gender, race or ethnicity.
Integration
The way different groups come together to form a whole in society
Social solidarity
Cohesion between individuals in society that ensures social order and stability
Role allocation
School “sifting” people into finding their role in society according to Talcott Parsons.
