Bridge

(Parsons belief - education acts as a bridge between home and wider society)
Universalistic standards
Standards that are applied to anyone regardless of their kinship ties
Particularistic standards
Standards that apply to an individual rather than the rest of society

ascribed status
status in society is given at birth
achieved status
status in society is achieved over time
socialisation function
maintenance of society by socialising young people into key cultural values
meritocracy
success, failure and status is based on hard work and achievement
role allocation
A system of allocating people to roles that best suit their skills and capabilities
society in miniature
when something is seen as a model of society (eg: school is a model of how society works)
Social solidarity
social unity. when everyone follows the same norms and values, resulting in social harmony
hierarchy
a social order or different groups based on wealth, power or income
equality of opportunity
a system in which everyone has equal chance of success
Integration
the act of bringing together smaller components into a single functioning unit.
