He says meritocracy is a society were success/failure is based on merit (ability +hard work )
Main beliefs?
How is the ES meritocracy?
Everyone can attend school
Most schools have a uniform (prevents bullying)
Everyone has the same amount of lessons + extra help can be given
Why isn’t the ES meritocracy?
Schools are ethnocentric Setting students Family situations could make it difficult Material + cultural deprivation Bullying Discrimination
What is role allocation ? (Davis and Moore)
Claims education allocates people to the job that is appropriate based on their talent
Why is role allocation bad?
Not helpful for those without an obvious talent
Not wanting to continue with their talent
Could be given special treatment from teachers
What are some criticisms of the functionalist view?
Education system isn’t meritocratic
School doesn’t teach us life skills
Doesn’t provide a bridge between individual and society since some ppl don’t fit into society
Students may not have an obvious talent
