Durkheim’s definition of religion
a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things - that is to say things set apart and forbidden - which unite into one single moral community all those who adhere to them

- definition too broad
- too conservative
- ignores religious differences can be a source of conflict and used to justify oppression
