Main Functionalists:
Durkheim - socialisation / social solidarity
Parson - bridge into society
Schultz - developing human capital
Davis and Moore - allocation
Durkheim?
Passing society’s culture (secondary socialisation) and building social solidarity and social cohesion through value consensus - a broad agreement on values.
Parsons?
Sees education providing a bridge between the particularistic value (personal / family values) and ascribed status of the family and the universalistic values and achieved status of society. Durkheim says he sees schools as a miniature society to prepare young people for the wider society based on meritocratic values
Schultz?
Sees education as developing human capital - a trained and qualified labour force, benefiting the economy. [vocational education involving training courses = often low quality, seen as boring.]
Davis & Moore ?
Selecting and allocating people for roles in a meritocratic society in which everyone has equality of opportunity - fitting the most able and qualified people into hierarchy of unequal positions in society.
