functionalist beliefs on edu Flashcards
Durkheim’s beliefs
education serves two basic functions:
1) promotes social solidarity, teaching them shared values and norms of society
2) it prepares students for work, equipping them with skills to participate in modern society
Parsons beliefs
Secondary socialisation, schools act as a bridge between families and society
teaches everyone universal rules
school is a meritocracy, employing ideas of individual achievement and equal opportunities
what is individual achievement?
everyone achieves their status through their own efforts and abilities
what is equal opportunity
everyone has the chance to reach their full potential
criticisms of Durkheim and Parsons
both fail to explain how all roles are filled in society
If everyone can be successful, why do some people fail?
Davis and Moore
Role allocation: education system allows the most talented people to get the best rewards. Some are naturally more talented, which encourages those who aren’t to work harder to achieve more
Criticisms of David and Moore
Its not always the most talented people who get the best rewards (nepo babies), and not all the best jobs are the most complex (nurses vs footballers)
