religion is a conservative force. This means it keeps society stable and prevents radical social change from taking place.
Functionalists also say that religion is an essential and inevitable feature of all successful societies. This is because religion fulfils many of society’s prerequisites, eg. society’s needs of social solidarity, value consensus and social integration. The function of religion is the contribution it makes to meet these needs
