3 functions of education
- Education is an agent of socialisation, teaching everyone shared norms and values therefore producing ideal citizens who are functioning members of society 2. Provides skills and qualifications needed for work 3. It allocate roles due to ability
Education- Parsons
Education acts as a bridge between between home and work. At home we are judged by particularistic characteristics (unique) and a status is ascribed at birth. In education we learn universalistic standards that apply to all and that a status is achieved
Education- Davis and Moore
Eduction acts as a meritocracy. The system is fair. Differences are due to ability and society is openly mobile. The most talented occupy the most demanding roles and any inequality encourages us to work harder
Education - Durkheim
It’s in education we become social beings. Teaching history and R/S ensures social solidarity (togetherness)and creates ideal citizens who are functioning members of society. The hidden curriculum teaches everyone the same norms and values
