functional neuroanatomy Flashcards

1
Q

cortical blood supply

where? + what?

A

1) Anterior cerebral artery (frontal)
2) Middle cerebral artery
3) posterior cerebral artery (posterior)
- The arteries deliver oxygenated blood, glucose and other nutrients to the brain, and the veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart, removing carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and other metabolic products

Q

the circle of Willis

A
  • connects the anterior and posterior cerebral circulations
  • Provides backup circulation to the brain in case a supply artery is blocked
  • providing blood to tissues that would otherwise become ischemic (allows for collateral circulation)
