Functional groups and dipole moments Flashcards
What determines the 3D structure of a molecule?
Molecular orbitals
What are isomers?
Molecules that have the same formula as each other, but the atoms are arranged differently and sometimes have different bond connectivities
What are constitutional isomers?
Isomers where the bond connectivity is different
What are stereoisomers?
Isomers with the same bond connectivity, but different spatial arrangement
Why is atom connectivity important for how a molecule behaves?
Affects physical properties and reactivity of the molecule
What are functional groups?
A certain grouping of atoms that behave in a predictable way
What is an alkene?
C-C double bonds
What is an alkyne?
C-C triple bond
What is a phenyl group?
Benzene ring
What is an amine? What are the 3 types?
N with a lone pair. Can have 2 H (primary), 1 H and 1 R group (secondary), or 2 R groups (tertiary)
What is an alcohol?
OH. O has two lone pairs
What is an ether?
R-O-R. 2 lone pairs on O
What is an alkyl halide?
C bonded to either F, Cl, Br, or I. Halide will have 3 lone pairs
What is a thiol?
SH
What is a nitrile?
C-N triple bond
What is an aldehyde?
C-O double bond, with an H filling the last open spot on C
What is a ketone?
C-O double bond, with an R group filling the last open spot on C
What is an ester?
C-O double bond, with O-R filling the last open spot on C
What is a carboxylic acid?
C-O double bond, with OH filling the last open spot on C
What is an amide?
C-O double bond, with NH2 (primary), NHR (secondary), or NR2 (tertiary) filling the third spot
What is electronegativitiy?
How well an atom attracts electrons to itself
What is the pattern of electronegativity in the periodic table?
Increases further right along a row, and decreases further down a column
What is an ionic bond?
Bond involving the transfer of electrons between atoms with opposite charges
What is a covalent bond?
Bond involving the sharing of electrons between atoms with similar electronegativities
