Functional Groups Flashcards
1
Q
Talk About Alcohol(2 features)
A
O= Very low electronegativity H=More Electronegative
2: Dipole, strong intermolecular forces called hydrogen bondings –> higher melting and boiling points than hydrocarbons
2
Q
Talk About Ethers(2 Features)
A
1: They are not as polar as alcohols, they cannot form hydrogen bondings, so - melting and boiling points.
2: They are functional isomers: = same formula but / Physical properties
3
Q
Talk about London forces(1 feature)
How does the shape of the surface affects them?
A
They are weak forces that depend on the shape of the surface.
The longer the surface the stronger the forces, the higher the melting and boiling points(planes)
