Rank the functional groups from lowest to highest priority.
Name the hydrocarbons as parent and side chains (1-6 carbons)
Name the 20 hydrocarbon compounds:
cyclohexane
What is an alkyl group?
Alkane portion of a molecule, with one hydrogen atom removed to allow boding to the rest of the molecule.
What are alkenes?
-Hydrocarbons that contain a C-C double bond
-it’s the most reactive part of the an alkene so we say it’s the functional group of the alkene
What are alkynes?
Hydrocarbons with c-c TRIPLE bonds as their functional group
What are aromatic hydrocarbons?
six membered ring with THREE double bonds (they are derivatives of benzene)
very stable
Alcohol functional group:
Ether Functional group
Ketone
TWO alkyl groups bonded to the carbonyl group (C=O) double bond
Aldehyde
ONE alkyl group and a hydrogen atom bonded to the carbonyl group
Carboxylic Acid
pKa 5 (very acidic)
-Contain the carboxyl group -COOH as their functional group
Acid Chloride
-Carboxylic acid derivative
Ester
-Carboxylic acid derivative
Amide
-Carboxylic acid derivative
Amines
-basic
-derivatives of ammonia
