Functional Groups Flashcards
1
Q
Alkane
A
- Lack of multiple bonds
- No heteroatoms
2
Q
Alkene
A
- Carbon-carbon double bond
3
Q
Alkyne
A
- Carbon-carbon triple bond
4
Q
Aromatics (arenes)
A
- Ring structure with alternating double and single bonds
- 6-membered rings is its most common form (benzene)
5
Q
Alcohol
A
- Oxygen attached to an R group and a hydrogen
6
Q
Ether
A
A single oxygen attached to 2 R groups (the connecting O)
7
Q
Ketones
A
- A carbonyl group (C=O) with 2 R groups attached at the carbonyl C
- R cannot =H for a ketone
8
Q
Aldehydes
A
- A carbonyl group (C=O) with one R group and one hydrogen attached to the carbonyl C
9
Q
Carboxylic acids (acids for short)
A
- Carbonyl group (C=O) with one R group and one OH group to the carbonyl C
- the OH is part of the carboxylic acid, NOT a separate alcohol! (Check to make sure)
10
Q
Ester
A
- Carbonyl group (C=O) with one R group and an OR group to the carbonyl C
- Check when looking at ethers (the connecting O between R groups)
11
Q
Amide
A
- Carbonyl group (C=O) with one R group and a NR2 group attached to the carbonyl C
- The NR2 is part of the amide, NOT a separate amine! (Check to make sure)
12
Q
Amine
A
A nitrogen atom attached to R or H groups
