Functional activity
All tasks, activities, and roles that an individual self-identifies as essential for their physical and psychological well being
Basic activities of daily living
Category of physical function
-sensorimotor skills of daily self-care: feeding, dressing, hygeine, physical mobility
Instrumental activities of daily living
Category of physical function
-Advanced skills: vital to independent community living: managing personal affairs, shopping, cooking, home chores, driving
Mental function
Component of psychological function
- refers to intellectual or cognitive abilities of the individual
- attention span, memory, problem solving, judgment, concentration, initiative
Affective function
Component of psychological function
- refers to coping mechanisms needed to deal with everyday events and traumatic/stressful happenings in life
- includes self-esteem, attitude toward body image, anxiety, depression
Social function
Refers to the individual’s performance of social roles
-Participation in recreational activities, clubs, social interactions with others (telephoning, visiting relatives/friends), occupational pursuits
Participation restriction
Discordance between actual performance of an individual in a particular role and community expectations
A good test is
- reliable
- valid
- easy to administer
- practical and simple to perform
- purposeful
- free of floor and ceiling effects

Independent
Patient is able consistently to perform skill safety with no one present
Supervision
Patient requires someone within arm’s reach as a precaution; low probability of patient having a problem requiring assistance
Close Supervision (Close Guarding)
Person assisting is positioned as if to assist, with hands raised but not touching patient; full attention on patient; fair probability of patient requiring assistance
Contact Guard
Therapist is positioned as with close guarding, with hands on patient but not giving any assistance; high probability of patient requiring assistance
