Functional Anatomy Flashcards
What is flexion?
Results in joint angle decreasing
What is extension?
Results in joint angle increasing
What is rotation?
A motion that occurs when a part turns on its axis eg. The eg rotates on the hip, the hand rotates on the neck
What is circumduction?
The circular movement of a limb
What is supination?
In the forearm, it refers to the turning of the forearm and hand so that the palm faces up.
In the foot, it refers to the outward roll of the foot during a normal motion.
What is pronation?
In the forearm, it refers to the turning of a hand so that the palm is facing down.
In the foot, it refers to the inwards roll of it during a normal motion.
What is Dorsi Flexion?
Movement which decreases the angle between the foot and leg, so that the toes are brought closer to the shin.
What is Plantar flexion?
Movement which increases the angle between the foot and leg so that toes are further away from the shin.
What is abduction?
Movement away from the midline of the body (arms and legs)
What is adduction?
Movement towards the midline of the body (arms and legs)
How many parts is the skeleton divided into?
2 main sections, the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton.
What is the axial skeleton and what does it do?
It forms the basic central structure to support the remainder of the skeleton.
The skull protects the brain
The vertebrae protect the spinal chord
The ribs protect the heart, lungs and kidneys.
What is the appendicular skeleton?
It has a major role to assist with movements including the major limbs: arms, legs, shoulder and pelvic giddles.
