Functional Anatomy Flashcards
What are the two parts of the skeleton called?
Axial and appendicular
What bones make up the axial skeleton?
Cranium, vertebral column, ribs, sacrum.
What bones make up the appendicular skeleton?
Arm bone, leg bones, clavicle, scapula and pelvis.
What type of joint is found at the trunk?
Gliding
What is the function of the right atrium?
Receives blood from the inferior and superior vena cava and pumps blood into the right ventricle.
What type of joint is found at the shoulder?
Ball and socket
What are the chordae tendinea?
These are known as the ‘heart strings’. They are connected to the bicuspid valves and stop them from collapsing and blood flowing back into the atrium.
Where is the sino atrial node located?
The walls of the right atrium.
What is the order of the cardiac conduction pathway?
SA node to the AV node to the bundle of his and then the purkinje fibres.
What are the two stages of the cardiac cycle?
Systole and diastole.
Define the term lateral.
Lateral means away from the midline of the body.
What is the function of the medulla oblongata?
The medulla oblongata controls heart rate.
What is ossification?
This is the process of bone remodelling. Bone is reabsorbed is broken down by osteoclasts in the body and calcium is reabsorbed. Osteoblasts will build new bone tissue to then increase bone density and strengthen the bone.
What type of joint is the hip?
Ball and socket
What plane of movement do flexion and extension style movements occur in?
Saggital
