Skeletal system part 1
Function of the Skeletal System
- Support and protection while providing levers for muscular action
- Storehouse for minerals
- Site for fat storage and bone cell formation
Three types of cell that make up bone
Osteoclast |Osteocytes | Osteoclast
It is the cell that forms the bone
Osteoblast
Formed when osteoblasts become trapped in the ossified matrix they have created
Osteocytes
Cells that “eat” bones away
Osteoclasts
It secrete the matrix bone and then supply the minerals necessary to harden it
Osteoblasts
Necessary for remodeling to take place by removing bone from where it is not needed
Osteoclasts
Compost of tiny, tightly compacted cylinders of bone called Haversian system
Compact bone
Thicker in the shafts of long bones than in their extremities
Compact bone
Structural unit of bone consist of a central canal surrounded by layers of bone tissue
Haversian system
Consists of tiny spicules of bone that appear randomly arranged with lots of spaces in between them
Cancellous Bones
Cancellous bones is also known as
Spongy bone
The spaces between the spicules are occupied by
Bone marrow
Forms blood cells and it makes up the majority of the bone marrow of young animals
Red Bone Marrow
Consists of primarily of adipose connective tissue which is better known as fat
Yellow bone marrow
True or False: Can a yellow bone marrow revert to red bone marrow
True: It can revert to red bone marrow if the body needs to produce a larger than normal number of blood cells
Smooth areas of compact bone where bones come in contact with each other to form joints
Articular surface
Large, round articular surface
Condyle
Spherical articular surface on the proximal end of a long bone
Head
Flat articular surface
Facet
The term process includes all the lumps, bumps, and other projections on a bone
Processes
Large prominence on the side of the bone
Trochanter
Small rounded point of a bone
Tubercle
A moderate prominence where muscles and connective tissues attach
Tuberosity
Sharp process
Spine
Raised or prominent part of the edge of a bone
Crest
Wide projection
Wing
Hole in a bone
Foramen
Depressed or sunken area on the surface of the bone. Usually occupied by muscle or tendons
Fossa
Small pit
Fovea
Opening into a canal
Meatus
Slit through bone
Fissure
Air-filled space in bone
Sinus
Passage in bone
Canal
