Function Flashcards
What are the function of cell extensions?
Flagella: propulsion and movement
Fimbriae: adhere to host cells (factor in virulence)
Pili: attach to other bacteria for transference of genetic material
What is the function of DNA?
hold genetic material “blueprint” or “recipe” needed to create the structures for support and activity.
What is transcription?
It is taking the information stored in DNA and transposing it onto another strand: RNA ultimately to make polypeptides the “structures” for support and activity.
What is translation?
It is the process of converting the information obtained from RNA into the necessary ‘string’ of amino acids for cellular function and support.
What does a ribosome do?
It aids in the development of the polypeptide chain during translation of the mRNA.
What are the functions of glycocalyces?
Capsules protect the bacteria, in a gelatinous fluid, from being engulfed by eukaryotic cells and contains water to prevent desiccation.
Slime layers prevent desiccation by coating the bacteria in a diffuse material.
What is the function of a plasma membrane?
To regulate the movement of things passing to and from the intracellular/extracellular spaces.
