Fullerenes and CNTs Flashcards
Name the two principal fullerenes
C60 (Buckminsterfullerene // Bucky ball) and C70
Describe Buckminsterfullerene
60 Carbon atoms
Pentagon/Hexagonal C Rings
FCC structure
What structure does Buckminsterfullerene have?
FCC
What structure does Buckminsterfullerene have at T<255K?
Simple Cubic
What differentiates C60 and C70?
An extra layer of C atoms
How do fullerenes relate to CNTs?
The central layers of C atoms between the two hemispheres of a C60 buckyball represent a SWCNT
Describe a CNT in relation to graphene
A CNT is similar to a perfect Graphene layer that has been rolled up
Name the 3 types of CNT
Zig-Zag // Armchair // Chiral
How do Armchair/Zig-Zag CNTs differ from Chiral CNTs?
Armchair and Zig-Zag have C atoms arranged in a circumferential fashion around the CNT while chiral CNTs have a helical arrangement
What is the equation for the Chiral Vector, C
C = na1 + ma2
What are a1 and a2 in the chiral vector?
a1 and a2 are the unit cell base vectors of the graphene sheet which is rolled up
What are n and m in the chiral vector?
They are integers which describe the CNT → They dictate the diameter of the CNT
d=√((n+m)^2−nm)
To what axis is the chiral angle taken relative to?
The zig-zag line
Name the two MWCNT models
Russian Doll
Parchment
Explain the Russian Doll MWCNT model
Multiple different CNTs
Varying diameters
Largest diameter = Outermost
Concentric arrangement
Explain the Parchment MWCNT model
Singular graphene sheet which is continuously rolled about itself
Explain the spacing in the Parchment MWCNT model
The spacing amongst the “layers” in the parchment model is similar to the spacing observed between graphene layers in graphite
