A

A

Haematocrit, shows ratio of RBCs to plasma and leukocytes in blood.

A

Mean corpuscular volume.
Increased = macrocytic.
Decreased = microcytic.
Normal = normocytic.

A

Mean corpuscular haemoglobin, the amount of haemoglobin in the RBC, which would be reduced in iron-deficiency anaemia.

A

Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, decreased in hypochromic microcytic anaemia.

A

A

What does “bands” refer to?

A

New neutrophils released from bone marrow, they’re the least mature so their nuclei are not yet segmented and look like bands or rods. As neutrophils mature, their nuclei become more segmented.

What is ESR, and what does it mean if it is raised?

A

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (centrifuged then allowed to sink to bottom - rate depends on which proteins in plasma are activated), it is raised in inflammatory conditions.
