Fuel Tanks, Fuel Systems Flashcards
Can a pump draw fuel from more than one tank at a time?
No.
What parts of 14 CFR define the airworthiness standards for the design and construction of aircraft?
Parts 23, 25, 27, 29, 31.
What is meant by “Critical Temperature” when talking about vapor formation?
The temperature at which the fuel turns to vapor.
Does the fuel quantity indicator need to be adjusted to account for unusable fuel?
Yes.
Do all fuel filling points need to have a provision for electrically bonding the aircraft to the fueling equipment? What are the exceptions?
Yes, except pressure fueling connection points.
What is the requirement for the airspace of tanks of they have interconnected outlets?
The airspaces of the tanks must also be interconnected.
Do aircraft engines require dedicated fuel pumps for each engine?
Yes.
What is sometimes used to prevent fuel from shifting rapidly during flight maneuvers?
Internal baffles
When installing a bladder type fuel tank, what is important to ensure about the bottom of the tank and why?
That there are no wrinkles on the bottom.
What three ways are fuel valves operated?
Manually, solenoid, electric motor.
All aircraft valves have a means to positively identify the position of the valve at all times.
True!
What are the two most common electric motor operated fuel valves?
Gate valve, plug type.
What is the other means to operate electrically a remotely located fuel valve?
Through the use of electric solenoids.
How is the flow of fuel regulated in most vane pumps?
Most vane pumps have an adjustable pressure relief feature.
If a vane type pump gets blocked, what is used to allow fuel to flow through the pump?
Relief valve.
Where is the main fuel strainer normally located?
At the lowest point the system.
What is a gascolator?
A fuel strainer, or filter, that also incorporates a sediment collection bowl.
Why is it imperative that jet fuel be clean and contaminant free?
Because turbine engine fuel control units are extremely close tolerance devices.
What does an air/fuel heater use to heat the fuel?
Warm compressor bleed air.
What does an oil/fuel heater use to heat the fuel and what else does it do as it heats the fuel?
It uses hot engine oil to heat the fuel, it cools the oil as well.
What are the five parts of an electronic fuel quantity system?
Transmitter Probe Trimmer Microchip Precalibrated quantity indicator
What are the five sub systems of jet transport fuel systems?
Storage, vent, distribution, feed, indicating.
What is the purpose of surge ranks on jet transport aircraft?
They are used for fuel overflow and fuel system venting.
How is the venting requirement on jet transport aircraft accomplished?
Check valves, float valves, multiple vent locations.
What are the four basic classifications used to describe fuel leaks?
Stain, seep, heavy seep, running leak.
What are the steps to troubleshooting?
Gather as much information about the problem as possible,
Replicate the problem
Understand the proper operation of the system
Determine all possible causes of the problem
Work from simplest/cheapest to most complex/expensive.
Where do you go to find out what must be inspected?
14 CFR 43 Appendix D
AC 43.13
Latest version of the aircraft service manual
What are the different types of inspections?
Pre flight 50 hour 100 hour Annual Progressive
What are the different kinds of leaks?
Stain, seep, heavy seep, running leak.
Where are locations to look for probable leaks?
Around seams and joints,
Around fluid lines and fittings,
Around the area of seals and gaskets.
What types of contaminants are there?
Solid contaminants
Water
Microorganisms
Surfactants
What are ways of detecting contaminants?
White bucket test, millipore test.
What are parts are involved in component operation?
Boost pump, selector valve, primer.
What must be done to repair minor leaks in rigid tanks?
Minor leaks can be repaired by sloshing.
How might one repair major leaks in a rigid tank?
Welding or soldering
What must be done before a tank can be soldered or welded?
It must be purged.
Where do most bladder tank problems arise from?
Allowing the tank to sit dry for too long.
How do you repair bladder tanks?
Bladder tanks have a finite life, but localized leaks can be repaired with a rubberized patch.
Where do fluid lines usually leak?
Where the line goes through a bulkhead or rubs another component.
What should not be done when trying to eliminate leakage in a line?
Over tightening the fittings.
Where should Teflon taps not be used?
On flared fittings
What should be checked on the fuel selector?
Check to confirm the fuel is being shut off when the selector is in the off position.
What is Avgas grade based on?
Octane eating content
What is volatility?
A measure of a liquids tendency to change into a gas.
What colour is 82UL octane marked as?
Purple
What is 100 octane rated as?
Green
What is 100 low lead ( 100LL) marked as?
Blue
What is detonation?
When fuel burns violently, instead of smoothly and evenly.
What is pre ignition?
Early ignition of the fuel/air mixture caused by a hotspot in the cylinder.
The higher the vapor pressure is, the higher the ________?
Volatility
What is Jet A?
Pure, highly refined kerosene
What is Jet B?
A mixture of kerosene and gasoline.
What is viscosity?
Internal resistance to flow
What is microbial growth?
Hydrocarbons in turbine fuel
What are two methods of fueling?
