Fuel And Its Classification Flashcards
What is fuel?
It is a substance which burns in air to produce energy without releasing harmful gases in large quantities.
What are types of fuel?
Primary(natural) and secondary (derived) fuels.
What are types of fuels in natural fuel?
Solid-Wood; Liquid-Crude oil; Gas-Natural Gas
Examples of secondary fuels?
Solid -Coke; Liquid-Kerosene; Gas- Coal gas
What is the calorific value of a fuel?
It is the amount of heat energy liberated by complete burning of a unit mass or volume of a fuel.
Mathematical representation of calorific value
Calorific value (kj/Kg)= Amt. Of liberated heat energy/ total mass of fuel.
Characteristics of ideal fuel
High calorific value
No pollution
Low cost easily available
Easy to handle store and transport
Moderate ignition temperature
Moderate rate of combustion
What are fossil fuels?
Coal, gas and petroleum were formed from fossils so they are called fossil fuels
What are two forms of carbon?
Free and combined form
What are two forms of free form of carbon?
Crystalline and amorphous
What two forms of combined form of carbon?
Organic and inorganic
Examples of organic, inorganic forms of carbon respectively.
Carbohydrates,CaCO3.
What is crystalline form of carbon?
It has definite arrangement of atoms
Explain Amorphous form of carbon
It has no definite arrangement.
Explain organic form of carbon.
Derived from living things.
