(3) primary types of Defensive Fires

A

Long Range Targets
* Where: Located outside the engagement area
* Why: Achieve Depth, provide FSP for security units (patrols and LP/OPs), create confusion and cause early deployment

Close Defensive Targets
* Where: Located within engagement area
* Why : Used as means of funneling, turning, and destroying the enemy within the EA

Final Protective Fires
* Where: Final “Wall of Steel”
* Why: Only priority target in the defense, placed on most likely dismounted enemy avenue of approach, every round agency has at rapid rate until they run out or the command to cease load is given by CO or most senior Marine

FPF Lengths by Firing Agency

A

Artillery Battery
* 6 Howitzers x 50m ECR = 300m length

81mm Platoon
* 8 mortars x 35m ECR = 280m length

81mm Section
* 4 mortars x 35 ECR = 140m length

60mm Section
* 3 mortars x 30m ECR = 90m length

Steps for Registering the FPF

A

1) Send CFF in three transmissions
* Linear target
* Danger Close
* Fuze Delay i/a
* Method of control:”at my command”
* Example: 1) Carnage de Raider, AF, k 2) Grid TH 1234 5678, k 3) Final Protective Fires, Attitude 1900, Danger Close, Delay i/a, At My Command, k

2) Adjust via creeping fires
* Done in 100m increments and no greater
* Start at 600m out and creep in to 400m-200m or closer (depending on artillery or mortars)
* Range corrections less than 50m will not be fired during the adjustment

3) Once the sheaf has been adjusted to the desired location, the FO will transmit: TGT#, any final refinements, FPF Registered, End of Mission
