F.S and PRR Flashcards
Pit and Fissure Sealants
Pit and fissure sealants are low-viscosity fluid resin composite intended to seal pits and fissures to prevent the development of dental caries.
GIC F.S
high acid-base bonding
less shrinkage
fluoride release
composite resin F.S
higher tensile strength
low susceptibility to desiccation
Resin- Based Sealant Material
-The first generation -
polymerized by the action of ultraviolet rays
Resin- Based Sealant Material
-The second generation -
chemically-cured
Resin- Based Sealant Material
-The third generation -
comprises visible light-polymerizing resin-based sealants. In this type of sealant, the visible light activates photo-initiators that are present in the sealant material and are sensitive to visible light in the wavelength region of around
470 nm (blue region).
Resin- Based Sealant Material
-The fourth generation -
fluoride-releasing
Indications of P.S
- Sealants are indicated, regardless of the patient’s age.
- Patients with high caries risk.
- Patients with deep pits and fissures.
- Stained occlusal pits and fissures.
- Presence of incipient enamel caries in pits and fissures (non-
cavitated).
contraindications of P.S
- Self cleansing pits and fissures.
- Compromised isolation
- Cavitated carious lesions.
Preventive Resin Restoration (PRR)
If a small caries lesion is detected, and the adjacent grooves and pits, although sound at the present time, are at risk for caries in the future, a preventive resin restoration of the active cavitated lesion
PRR
-minimal removal of the tooth structure
-may be combined with the use of flowable composite or sealant to seal radiating noncarious fissures or pits that are at high risk for subsequent caries activity.
