Fruits and vegetables Flashcards
What is an autotroph?
Any organism capable of self-nourishment by using inorganic materials as a source of nutrients and using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis as a source of energy, as most plants and certain bacteria and protists
What are the 10 vegetable types?
Bulbs (fennel, garlic, leeks, onion)
Flowers (artichokes, cauliflower)
Fruits (peppers, chilis, zucchini, cucumber)
Fungi (mushrooms, truffles)
Leaves (Brussel sprouts, cabbages, lettuce)
Roots (Beetroots, carrots, radishes)
Seeds (Beans, favas, peas)
Stems (Asparagus, celery)
Tubers (Potatoes, yams)
Rhizomes (Ginger, turmeric)
What is the importance of seasonality?
- When a fruit or vegetable is fully ripe, the product will be more flavourful
- Highest nutritional value, freshness means less need for chemical treatment
What is intensive agriculture?
- Higher yields
- Monovarietal cops
- Extensive use of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides
- Often used for growing crops for animal feed
- Modern storage treatment for long shelf life (Ethylene gas, wax)
- Commonly use GMO
What is extensive agriculture?
- Lower yield
- The crop yield depends on the natural fertility of the soil, the terrain, the climate and the availability of water
- Crop rotations, greater spacing, more attention to soil nutrients, biodiversity
- Yields are roughly 25-50% lower than intensive agriculture
- Research older varieties that are more flavorful and resistant
- Diversity of crops
