From Notes Flashcards
Name the components of the electromagnetic spectrum in order of wavelength - longest to shortest.
1) Radio waves
2) Infrared
3) Visible Light
4) UV
5) X-rays
6) Gamma
What are the colors of visible light in order of decreasing wavelength?
1) Red
2) Orange
3) Yellow
4) Green
5) Blue
6) Indigo
7) Violet
What are the three different types of spectrum?
1) Continuous - full light
2) Emission - emits from hot gas
3) Absorption - travels through cold gas
How does a prism effect light?
A prism changes the medium through which the light is traveling. This causes the light to slow down and change direction. When the light leaves the prism, it speeds up again. The change in angle due to the change in speed is dependent on the wavelength or color of the light.
List three basic assumptions about the universe.
1) The laws of physics are the same throughout the universe.
2) The universe is lazy.
3) There is no preferred spot in the universe.
List the four transitions and how they are defined (which shell they land on).
1) First Shell - Lyman transitions - UV photons given off
2) Second Shell - Balmer transitions - Visible light photons
3) Third Shell - Paschen transition - IR photons
4) Fourth Shell - Bracket transition - IR photons
What three things happen to photons as they meet a gas?
1) Reflected - continuous
2) Absorbed - emission
3) Pass through - absorption
What is the uniform expansion model?
Regardless of where you are in the universe, if you looked around you, you would see all of the galaxies in the universe moving away from you.
