From DNA to protein Flashcards
What is the central dogma?
- information in DNA is conserved by DNA replication
- during gene expression, information is passed to mRNA
- information passes from mRNA to protein by translation
What are proteins?
linear polymers of amino acids joined together to form amino acyl residues
What is the primary structure of proteins?
sequence of amino acyl residues in the polypeptide chain
What are secondary proteins?
the arrangement of alpha helices and beta strands and loop regions
What is the tertiary structure of proteins?
overall shape when side chains are included
What is chromatin remodeling?
changes in DNA and associated proteins that affect transcription
What are transcription factors?
proteins that bind to DNA and regulate the initiation of transcription
What do non-coding RNAs do?
regulate gene expression by associating with mRNA and many implicated in disease
