From Cells to Disease Flashcards
Describe cell structure and function in terms of their macromolecules, membranes and organelles.
What do we mean by a “cell”?
A cell is the most basic unit of life
Name the organells in a cell?
Nucleus Nucleolus Mitochondria Rough endoplasmic reticulum Smooth endoplasmic reticulum Ribosomes Golgi apparatus Cytoplasm Vesicle (secretory and transport) Plasma membrane Cytoskeleton
what is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
The production and transportation of lipids.
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Manufacture and tranport of proteins ( protein synthesis)
what is the golgi aparatus
modification and packaging of proteins/lipids into vesicles.
What is the function of the secretory vesicles?
Secretory vesicles store proteins/ chemicals that can be used when nessecary
What is the function of transport vesicles?
Transport vesicles contain products from the golgi apparatus and transport it to the cell surface.
What is the function of lysosomes?
lysosomes contatin hydrolytic enzymes and are responsible for the breakdown of foreign or dead material.
what is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus contains the DNA of a cell.
what is the function of the nucleolus?
The function of the nucleolus is where ribosomes are produced and assembled.
What is the function of the mitochondra?
The mitochondria is where ATP is synthesised. Its the powerhouse of the cell.
what are the cytoskeletal components?
pneuomic think: mia
Microtubles
Intermediate filaments
Actin filaments
what is the function of the cytokeleton?
cell shape cell contractability cell mechanic cell transport ( via vesicles) cell movement
what are the main macromolecues?
carbohydrates
proteins
lipids
nucleic acid
