From Brain to Neuron Flashcards
What does Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) do?
Circulates and cushions the brain, flushes unwanted products from brain to blood vessels, and sets environment for brain cells (e.g. glucose levels)
Where is CSF normally found?
In ventricles, between meninges and around brain cells
What causes a stroke?
A blocked cerebral blood vessel stops blood reaching that area of the brain
Name the features of a Neuron
Dendrites, soma and axons
what do Neurons do?
Transmit information electronically and chemically
What is the role of glial cells?
maintain homeostasis, form myelin and the peripheral nervous system, and provide support and protection of neurons
Describe the flow of electricity in a neuron
flow of charged particles from an area of high potential to low potential (like water)
What is Ohm’s Law?
current (Amps) = potential (V) x conductance
What is conductance in nerves?
The wave of current flowing down an axon (action potential), ~30-40m/s
How do cells signal electronically?
Movement of ions across the membrane to create a conc. gradient
