How to recognize a free bid in competitive bidding?

Free Bids (Constructive, but Not Forcing)

A free bid in AYC is a new suit bid at the one- or two-level when partner could have passed. It shows some values but does not force a response.

How to recognize an invitational bid in competitive bidding?

A

Invitational Bids (Suggesting Game, but Not Forcing)

An invitational bid encourages partner to bid game if they have extra values.

✔ It is usually a jump in a new suit or a jump raise of partner’s suit (NB by responder to distinguish from jump shift).
✔ It shows 10-12 HCP.
✔ Partner is encouraged to bid game but can pass with a minimum.i

How to recognize a game-forcing bid in competitive bidding?

A

Game-Forcing Bids (Partner Cannot Pass)

In AYC, game-forcing bids commit the partnership to reaching at least game. They show 13+ points or equivalent playing strength.

✔ Jump shift = game-forcing.
✔ Cue bid in the opponent’s suit = game-forcing.
✔ Partner cannot pass below game.
